Training to help churches support bereaved people
Bereavement Care Awareness aims to equip churches by giving them the tools they need to support bereaved people in their church or wider community.
You’ll come away with:
- A better knowledge of how bereavement affects people in different ways.
- An understanding of the grieving process.
- Ideas for the practical and emotional support you can offer someone in the weeks and months after the funeral.
- Practical skills to carry out supportive listening, a key tool in bereavement support.
- Advice and tips on ways your church can support bereaved people in your community.
Understanding bereavement
Studies show that on average each death affects at least 5 people. This means that in the UK alone, 3 million people experience grief in some form each year.
We understand just how much of an impact loss can have on each individual and how great a need there is for bereavement support.
In many cases, the church is best placed to provide this support after the funeral. Yet we realise it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to helping people through what can potentially be one of the most difficult times in their lives.
Whether you have many years of experience supporting bereaved people or you are relatively new to it, this training will help equip you to support those suffering the pain and heartache of loss.
This training is a single session of just three hours online, or three and a half hours in person, that will better equip you to support someone dealing with bereavement when they turn to the local church for support.
The training is facilitated by trained Care for the Family volunteers. We are currently running the training online via Zoom and in person by arrangement.
Bereavement Care Awareness has been produced as part of Care for the Family’s bereavement training for churches. It is for anyone who has a heart for supporting bereaved people, as well as church leaders and pastoral care team workers. It will benefit you whether you are already engaged in bereavement support or are considering the possibility of developing it.
Find out more about the training and why we think it’s important for churches to support bereaved people. Read an article about how an Anglican minister discovered the need for this training through her own bereavement journey.
