Book your holiday for 2025

  • Applications will open at 10am on 20 January 2025.
  • Applications will close at midnight 2 February 2025.
We are changing the way we take bookings for Take A Break in 2024.

Applications open on Tuesday 16 January 2024 at 10.00am and will remain open for three weeks, until midnight on Monday 5 February. Instead of allocating places on a ‘first come, first served basis’, all applications will be considered after the end of that three week period. Priority will be given to those who have not already attended a Take A Break holiday in the past.

Every year single parent families come on our Take A Break action holidays to spend time together, enjoy new experiences, make memories and have great fun. Take A Break action holidays are packed with outdoor activities such as canoeing, raft-building and climbing.

Enjoying these adventures alongside other single parent families will give you a great opportunity to make new friends too.

Real life stories

Frequently asked questions

The programme and activities differ depending on the centre. However, a typical Take A Break holiday includes lots of outdoor activities, a day trip, games, and eating together. Activities on our more active holidays might include archery, abseiling, crate climbing, ropes courses, a BBQ, canoeing, mountain biking and a zip wire! For our less active holiday in Dale, activities may include rock pooling, seine netting, crabbing, a day at the beach and coastal walks. Please note that on our Fellowship Afloat holiday is based on a converted light vessel moored on the coast and sailing is one of the main activities on this holiday. If you would like more information about the centres or the activities that take place on our holidays, please contact us on 029 2081 0800 or by email.

All the adventure activities are led by trained and qualified instructors.

No. You will be guided by the instructors and provided with any specialist equipment.

All our holidays take place at Christian-run activity centres, but they are definitely open to people of all faiths and none. Every day there will be a ‘Thought for the Day’ and, at some centres, a Sunday morning service or an evening epilogue – all of which are Christian in nature. Attendance is entirely optional. There will be alternatives during this time for those who do not wish to attend.

We strongly recommend you take out appropriate travel insurance for your circumstances. Please read our brief guide.

Your holiday will be hosted by a team from Care for the Family. One of the hosts will call you several weeks before the holiday to get to know you a little and answer any questions you may have. Your host will also give you their mobile phone number in case you need to contact them about the holiday.

A single parent is a man or woman who is widowed, divorced, separated or unmarried. They have a child/children who may or may not live permanently with them and they or may not be the child’s primary caregiver.

You and your family will have your own room and you will not need to share with another family.

For the overall holiday you will be with and responsible for your child/children at all times. However, there will be a few scheduled opportunities at each centre to have some time with the other parents without your children when they are being supervised by instructors.

We really hope you will want to do all the activities as they are great fun and help to strengthen family relationships. Some of the activities are challenging and we will never make you do something you are not comfortable doing. If you have a medical condition and are unable to participate in some activities the instructors can accommodate this. You will however need to go with your children, encourage them, make sure they listen to the instructors and stay safe.

Smoking is not allowed in any part of the buildings or rooms at any centre. You may smoke outside, and some centres have designated smoking areas.

No alcohol or drugs (other than those prescribed by a GP) may be brought into any of the centres.

If being on the water is a concern for you or your child, please contact us to talk this through before booking your break.

The accommodation, food and activities are all provided within the cost of the holiday. However, at some centres you will go off site and you may want a little money for souvenirs or an ice cream at the beach.

This is dependent on which activity centre you choose. Often there will be family entertainment, including games or a film, or an evening just for parents.

Take A Break holidays are family holidays made even better by sharing the experience with other single-parent families.

Yes, once we have confirmed your place, a £50 deposit is payable by 21 February 2025, along with the return of your Family Information Form.

The final balance must be paid in full by 31 May 2025, otherwise your place will be cancelled and you will lose your deposit.

Travelling to and from the activity centre is your responsibility. Due to data protection we are not able to give out the details of any other families who would be attending your holiday for a lift share.

The price of the holiday does not include travel so you will need to budget for this and organise transport yourself. Most centres have arrangements to meet people from the closest rail station or bus stop.

Unfortunately not. The centres host visitors before and after our Take A Break holidays and will need to get their rooms set up and ready for their next guests.

All the centres have Wi-Fi, please ask for details when you arrive at the centre.

The centres have a limited number of rooms and some of the rooms are very small. In most cases we could not provide a separate room for a carer. Please contact us to talk about your needs.

Unfortunately not, however some venues may be able to accept assistance dogs. Please contact us to find out more.

Most centres have drying rooms for your clothes if they get wet and muddy. It is advisable to bring enough clothes to cover the whole week without the need for washing them as many centres do not offer the use of washing machines.

The holidays are very active and you will have opportunities to be doing different activities every day. If you have any concerns about your or your children’s level of fitness or ability to complete activities, please contact us to discuss this.

For the most part, yes. However, there will be scheduled opportunities at each centre to have some time with other parents without your children whilst they are being supervised by instructors, for you to be able to attend things such as a cream tea or an evening out bowling. These activities vary on different holidays. For the overall holiday, however, you will be with and responsible for your child/children at all times.

We do not encourage this as the holiday is a group holiday. The week is planned out in advance so that you get the maximum benefit out of the week.

Yes, all applications for the holidays must be made online. If you have any questions or are struggling to fill in the form, please call us on 029 2081 0800.
